People drink alcohol for a variety of reasons but they are all nonsense, alcohol does not help with anything and is certainly not good for you. It is after all a substance that causes many health hazards and other many social problems. The truth is, alcoholism is a disease, people get addicted to it and it can be very, very hard for alcoholics to stop drinking. So why do people start drinking? Surely people don’t drink to get themselves into trouble. Here are some excuses why a person might get into the habit of drinking alcohol.
Excuse: “Drinking helps me have a good time and makes me feel good.”
Truth: Drinking can give you a “buzz” when the alcohol first hits your system, but it does not make you high or happy. Alcohol only has this effect for a short while and often leaves people feeling depressed and miserable later. For people who feel like they’re too stressed out, shy, or nervous to have a good time in a social situation, alcohol can seem like the answer. Many people who say they drink to “loosen up” or have a good time end up so drunk that they don’t even remember what they did!
“Drinking makes me feel “grown-up”
Truth: What is so great about this? Very often adults are drinking to forget that they are adults with all the responsibilities that they have. Drinking alcohol is usually considered “grown up”, “glamorous” or “attractive. This is nonsense, many of the top actors, outstanding people and athletes do not touch alcoholic drinks at all.
“Because I`m curious about alcohol”
Truth:There really is no great mystery to it. After a while drinking will lose its thrill. That’s why so many teenagers develop drinking problems. When drinking starts to lose its thrill they need more alcohol to enjoy themselves and they often lose their ability to find pleasure in other ways. Before long they have lost they chance to do well in school, lost their health, and the trust of the friends and family.
“I drink because it helps me get on with people”
Truth: People say that alcohol makes it easier for them to find new friends and socialise easily with others as they feel they are better company. This is not true. People who drink often become bad company for friends. Drinking has nothing to do with having more friends and you certainly don’t look more attractive when drunk.
“I drink to be accepted by friends”
You have heard it called “peer pressure”. Friendships that are based on drinking don’t last too long. A real friend will respect your decisions. Those are not true friends and those relationships have nowhere to go. When you build friendships around common interests, sports, or another activity, your relationships can grow.
“Drinking helps me deal with my problems.”
Truth: Many people drink too much in order to escape from their lives and forget their troubles. Since alcohol makes the brain and memory go fuzzy, some people actually forget what’s troubling them, at least for a night. But when the person wakes up, all the troubles are still there. Alcohol never, ever fixes what is wrong with somebody’s life. In fact, it almost always makes things worse, because alcoholism is just one more problem to add to whatever else is going on.
“I drink because everyone else does”
Truth: Drinking alcohol because others do it is a bad reason for doing it. It is time wasting and money wasting. You could be spending the money spent on alcohol on other more important things . Whatever you choose, do what feels right for you.
Excuse: “Drinking is cool.”
Truth: This is one of the biggest lies about alcohol. The truth is that, while the image of a “drinker” might seem cool to some people, drinking can make you do things that are totally uncool…like having slurred speech, being clumsy, saying things you don’t mean, and maybe even throwing up.
Excuse: “I can’t have a drinking problem, because I only drink beer and wine, not hard liquor.”
Truth: Beer, wine, and liquor all contain the exact same drug: alcohol! Drinking 5 beers is exactly the same as drinking 5 glasses of wine, and these are exactly the same as drinking 5 shots of liquor.
Drinking is a bad habit to get into and if people have other things in their lives such as work, family, friends, hobbies, sports and leisure then they will find they will not be bored. Alcohol is addictive , it can get hold of you making it difficult to stop. But, this BAD habit can be broken very easily providing you have will power.
