The truth is, alcoholism is a disease, people get addicted to it and it can be very, very hard to give up drinking. People drink alcohol for a variety of reasons but they are all nonsense, alcohol does not help with anything, in fact, it always causes more problems and is certainly not good for you. Alcohol only brings misery, poverty, broken homes and social degradation to our lives. And it’s often a vicious circle. The drinking contributes to family problems, and the alcoholic often drinks more as a way of coping with those problems. The negative consequences of alcohol consumption are so great that it is impossible to list them.
Alcohol affects every part of the body. It is carried through the bloodstream to the brain, stomach, internal organs, liver, kidneys, muscles – everywhere. We can thank alcohol and for deaths from cirrhosis of the liver, drunk driving, alcohol induced fights and accidents, and cancer just to name a few. But how does the average man look at alcohol? Most people will say that it is a “safe” and “social” activity. Unless you consider 110,000 deaths only in the US only “safe” and unless you consider rape and assault as being “social”.
Alcohol remains the number one cause of all crime. Nearly 70% of murders are committed under the influence of alcohol (ibid. ). WHO statistics suggest that it is involved in about 50% of all traffic accidents. A study by the British Medical Association showed that alcohol was present in 64% of all public offences and 40% of all violent assaults. Alcohol was also present in 75% of stabbings, 70% of beatings, and 50% fights. How can one look at that and say that alcohol is safe and social? The fact that a person may have been drunk when committing any such crime is no excuse in the eyes of the law..
Alcohol can cause many different problems in your life. The negative short term effects of drinking too much alcohol are loss of judgment, blurred vision, slurring of speech, and loss of balance. Drinking alcohol can also lead to emotional and psychological problems like sadness, depression, and even hallucinations. If you drink too much alcohol you can experience some extreme negative effects including unconsciousness, coma, and even death.
Not only can drinking too much alcohol cause negative short term effects, but it can also cause negative long term effects. These long term effects include loss of brain cells, liver failure, stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, epilepsy, nerve damage, heart failure and certain types of cancer (of the throat, mouth, liver, esophagus and larynx). If a pregnant woman drinks too much alcohol, it can seriously hurt her unborn baby and lead to birth defects.
Not only is the health of the drinker spoiled but so are the lives of drinkers and their families too. Drinkers spend much more on alcohol than anything, depriving themselves and their family of things they really need. A drinkers studies, work and reputation may all suffer as a result of alcohol and there are many people who have lost their job’s, families and friends due to their drinking habits.
How can we stop this epidemic of poison? It’s easy to do if you are not addicted. Secondly, educate people about alcohol; show alcohol for what it really is. Educate yourself and others about alcohol. Also, if you know someone who is an alcoholic, don’t be afraid to help him or her. Giving up alcohol could save their life.
If one thing were going to bring a country to a devastating and painful halt, then it would most definitely be alcohol. No other substance has caused nearly the amount of death, chaos, crime, and pain. And to make matters much worse, it is almost completely ignored as a poison, or even as a drug. Besides the costs, alcoholism has ruined the lives of millions. But with help, anyone who has a problem with alcohol can be successful at stopping. And if you’re still a kid, help yourself by not starting in the first place!
